You can’t get much closer to the action than the Elwood, which is nestled in the shadow of Comerica Park and Ford Field. This historic venue (built in 1936 but reopened at its current location between the stadiums in 2002) will be hosting radio remotes from WXYT-FM (97.1, the Ticket) Friday, Sunday and Monday to celebrate the games. There likely will be standing-room-only crowds at the art deco diner. But no matter how long the lines might be, the half-pound burgers and Monte Cristo sandwiches ($6.25) and $7 Bloody Marys will be worth the wait. Named for its original location on Elizabeth Street and Woodward Avenue, the Elwood and its adjacent garage patio will open at 7 a.m. on Opening Day.

For more than 40 years, sports enthusiasts have hailed this Detroit classic, where simplicity is the key ingredient. Since 1965, burgers, Budweiser and Detroit sports have brought the man’s man to this eatery near Tiger Stadium.
